With 14 years of experience working in film and television, I've encountered my fair share of misconceptions about the role. Let's look at some of the most common myths and set the record straight:
🎬 "Script coordinators just format scripts"
While script formatting is indeed a key aspect of the role, it's far from the only responsibility. Script coordinators also track revisions and script drafts, prepare script reports, and ensure that the crucial link between the script and production – between the writers, producers, director and the rest of the crew – is well-maintained through good communication and efficient work methods. By doing this, a script coordinator can play a vital role in ensuring that the production stays on track, deadlines are met, and creative visions are realised.
🎬 "Anyone can do it"
There's a misconception that script coordination is a simple task that anyone with basic computer skills can handle. In reality, it requires a unique skill set including attention to detail, organisational skills, a deep understanding of storytelling, and most importantly, an absolute rock-solid understanding and proficiency in Final Draft, the industry-standard scriptwriting software.
🎬"It's a low-level position"
Script coordination is often seen as a stepping-stone or entry-level position in the industry. However, it's a highly specialized role that requires expertise and experience. A skilled script coordinator can make an impact on the success of a production. A producer’s or director’s assistant attempting to make script revisions versus an experienced script coordinator performing a range of complicated duties can make the huge difference between a chaotic production and a seamless one! (And I should know, having started out as that stumbling producer's assistant...!)
By debunking these myths, I hope to shed light on the important role that script coordinators play in the production process. Let's continue to celebrate the dedication, skill, and creativity of script coordinators everywhere!
